DHH: KALAHI, DePaul Competitive Cheer Team, and DePaul Chess Club

On February 5, 2021, representatives from KALAHI, DePaul Competitive Cheer Team, and DePaul Chess Club spoke about their organizations on the DePaul Half Hour.

KALAHI is a Filipino ethnic club dedicated to building a community around Filipino history and heritage. Kalahi in Filipino translates to “of the same lineage” or “of the same community,” and as such, the group welcomes Filipino students, staff, and allies to participate in their activities. They are known for their community events, dinners with traditional Filipino catering, and movie nights. Their main goal is to create a welcoming and safe space for individuals in the Filipino community. KALAHI meets bi-weekly on Mondays 4:30-5:30pm CST and their meetings are open for anyone to join. You can find out more information and reach out to KALAHI at their Instagram, Facebook, DeHub and at their email kalahidepaul@gmail.com.

DePaul Competitive Cheer Team is a co-ed strictly competitive cheerleading team, meaning they do not perform at any DePaul sporting events. Instead, all of their practices and efforts prepare them for an annual cheerleading competition held in Daytona, Florida in April called the NCA College Nationals. During their practice sessions, the team primarily focuses on building their competition specific skills, including tumbling and stunting. Every year starting in January, they focus on choreography and final prep as the competition nears. Once a week they have weight, strength, and endurance training at the gym. While they have made a transition to online, they also practice 2-3 times a week in person when possible. You can meet the team, practice, and showcase what you know at their Open Gym sessions which are open to all experience levels. You can reach out with your first name, last name and email on their Instagram. You can also find them on Facebook, their website, and Twitter.

DePaul Chess Club is a casual and competitive chess-playing group that is garnering students interest as they shift to an online format. They have transitioned their weekly meetings to Zoom where they play against one another using chess.com. The site also has helpful tools for players who are looking to learn and grow in their skills. Every player is there to help one another and challenge each other while they expand their knowledge of the game. You can find them on DeHub or contact their student leaders, Michael Elzinga and Omar Majzoub at melzinga@mail.depaul.edu and omajzoub2013@gmail.com respectively.
