Slowcore and Twang: Babehoven plays Chicago

On May 16th, Babehoven landed at Lincoln Hall last Saturday night. Opening for Ray Bull on their North American tour, titled, “Please Stop Laughing,” rock-indie-duo band, Babehoven, kicked off the night.

Babehoven’s most recent album came out in 2024 titled “Waters Here in You,” where multiple tracks were played at Lincoln Hall. tonight. Notable mentions include, “Birdseye,” ‘Dizzy Spin,” “Chariot,” and my personal favorite: “Ella’s From Somewhere Else. Their sound has just the right amount of slowcore with a bit of twang. Making them the perfect blend to listen to if you’re in favor of Free Range, Squirrel Flower, and vilagerrr.

I had the pleasure of meeting the lead singer, Maya, and expressed my appreciation for their music. Their passion for the band is admirable. She mentioned how neat and surreal it has been to open for Ray Bull since their fanbase is pretty far removed from Babehoven’s signature twang. But that’s the beauty of music, it brings people together, even across sounds.

In late March, they released a single, “Wheels,” featuring Billie Marten and Squirrel Flower. A track that was organically created and made entirely in one day. The newest release is their single “Blue Around You” freshly released on Monday, May 11th.

I waited to hear this song live to ensure that first listen felt, and I can safely say I am not disappointed. The track feels like something I’d put on during a long-way home journey at sunset.

Babehoven performing at Lincoln Hall was perfect to have an intimate experience, especially since they’re a band who I’ve been wanting to see for a while now. A completely unique experience, and full of content as I was leaving the venue.

Don’t fret, they’re still on tour till mid June. Go out and support local live music. Check out their website here.
