Baby Queen’s anthology of aesthetics

Artists like Melanie Martinez, Billie Ellish and Grimes have cultivated aesthetics that are so distinctive, if you were to see somebody with half dyed hair you would be reminded of Melanie Martinez. In the past couple years new artists such as Ashnikko and Doja Cat have adopted eccentric fashions that have helped propel themselves in the music scene.

Doja Cat’s iconic Moo! music video featured her in a cow print ruffle two piece by Grayscale, the outfit is so iconically campy that it truly set Doja on the map of many people’s fashion radar. Ellish and Ashnikko are taking inspiration from Anime icons such as Jolyene Joestar and Hatsune Miku cementing their internet subculture.

When I sat down with Baby Queen for the second time, I had to ask her about her eclectic fashion style. I for one was obsessed with her neon orange eyeliner look in the music video These Drugs

When I asked Baby Queen aka Bella what inspires her fashion look, she said, “I have never thought of myself as somebody who is particularly fashionable…I like to shock in a way…I feel like dressing up is like putting on a character or putting on armor, you can really be confident when you are dressed up confidently.”

Although Bella stated that her style is still coming together and that she isn’t a fashionista just yet, she is still coming out with some incredible outfits. One of my favorite pieces she wears quite frequently is a customized studded moto jacket adorned with numerous patches that resembles the famous patched jean jacket that Elton John frequently wore in the 1970s. Another look that I absolutely love is her rainbow color-blocked chevron suit she wore for her Vevo DSCVR performance. The look reminds me of the rhinestone Versace blazer that Taylor Swift wore to the 2019 VMAs, but with a uniquely Bella twist to it.

Baby Queen is also exploring different fashion styles through her singles. She looks at dressing up as putting on a character and with each new release, we meet a different aspect of her personality as a character. For These Drugs, she donned a black choppy wig, dark makeup and an outfit that feels at home in 2005 Hot Topic. This grunge goth character was adoringly dubbed “The Goth” and was given her own little bio and canonical place in the Baby Queen lore.

In anticipation for the release of Dover Beach, the Baby Kingdom (the term for Baby Queen’s fans) were introduced to the Girl Next Door, with an outfit that Cher Horowitz would approve of. The color-coordinated baby blue outfit features pink lace shaded frilly socks and under white high block heels, a blue fuzzy pencil skirt that is styled with an oversized white dress shirt. The look is pulled together with an oversized sleeveless blue and cream checkered sweater vest paired with a blue silk tie.

These “characters” each have their own unique style of fashion which really allows Baby Queen to transcend the typical style constraints that many different artists find themselves in. In addition to style, Queen gave “The Goth” her own playlist on Spotify. At this rate, these characters are going to be more flushed out than the entirety of the Marvel Universe. And there are many more characters to come. I am honestly incredibly excited to see each of them and get to see their own fashion senses.

My fingers are crossed that we end up getting to see Bella’s take on dark academia and cottage core. Either way, I am going to be eagerly checking out my Instagram feed to see who I get to meet next.
