Members of the DePaul SGA (Student Government Association) assembled on the evening of September 30, 2021, at the Lincoln Park campus for their weekly meeting to discuss the pertinent topics of the week and pass a new budget.
Ahead of the SGA Fall 2021 Election, the Association’s meeting began by tuning in to the “Meet The Candidates” event, where hopeful candidates for this upcoming election got a chance to introduce themselves and were asked questions about crucial topics concerning the DePaul student body. In a town hall-style discussion, the candidates opined on how to improve the DePaul experience for all students. For instance, they engaged in a discourse on how they could make the transition for first-generation college students more comfortable and inclusive. One candidate proposed that there should be an active effort to make first-generation students aware of each other for support and of all of the resources that DePaul has to offer.
After the event, SGA unanimously voted to pass a budget proposal. Vice President Kevin Holechko presented the proposed budget for this year, a little over $14,000, which would decide how the funds would be distributed. The funds would be split between Supplies, Vincentian Service Day, Internal Affairs, Individual Committees, etc.
The SGA conversed about the possible dangers of this upcoming flu season, considering its heightened risk due to the pandemic and how they should address the issue. One suggestion was to create a widespread initiative to make students aware of this risk and hold events to promote getting the flu vaccine to mitigate Covid-19 risk.
The members of the SGA talked about taking off a meeting for the approaching midterm exams. They agreed that it would be beneficial for their academics, as academics come first, and voted on which day to take off. Though it wasn’t unanimous, the members voted to take off the meeting on Thursday, October 7, 2021.
Following some final thoughts, comments, and questions from the gallery, the meeting of September 30, 2021, was adjourned.
