About
Etymologically speaking ‘Holy’ can be traced back to the Proto-Indo-European ‘kailo’ meaning, ‘whole, uninjured’. This ended up going through several sociolinguistic transmutations — from Proto-Germanic to Germanic to Old English to, present-day, English. While ‘Holy’ of course these days is inescapably associated with religiosity, the true definition is something like ‘that which must be preserved entirely and cannot be transgressed or violated’. It’s also been commonly used as an intensifier: whether in euphemistic expressions like, ‘holy mackerel’ or in sectarian tinged politics, like the ‘Holy Alliance’ between the ci-devant empires of Prussia, Austria, and Russia a few hundred years ago. I will spare you, the reader, the full etymology of the word ‘hour’ — but its English roots have basically always described an equal aliquot of the full 24 ‘hour’ day. Therefore, this internet radio show, ‘The Holy Hour’, can be thought of as an inviolate, sin-free, whole, and Platonically ideal portion of the 24 hour day in which music from a wide range of places, people, and epochs is played and examined under a thoughtful (and, naturally, holy) lens.

I (Sam) am a first-year graduate student at DePaul. I was born at 12:24 on May 2nd at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. I am both right-handed and right-footed. My blood type is B-. I wear a size 13 shoe. I have opinions, some of which are interesting. I enjoy long walks on the beach. I believe immanence is much more significant (not to mention, obtainable) than transcendence. I like Raisin Bran. My favorite baseball player is Asdrubal Cabrera. I have had (suffered) four concussions. I am, generally, very skeptical of psychiatrists. I believe the idea that Nietzche is misunderstood is, itself, misunderstood. I, in agreement with Nietzsche, believe that “without music, life would be a mistake”. I believe I am the only one who understands Nietzsche. I am not always so sure of myself. I find compensatory consumption both pleasurable and painful. I do not believe in the zodiac. I am full of contradictions. I do not have many memories before the age of 6. I think Donald Barthelme is a great writer – maybe my favorite. I prefer room-temperature water to ice-cold. I am very suspicious of Taylor Swift, viz., her existence. I shook Bill Clinton’s hand in the winter of 2008. I like single origin coffee beans. I shower at night. I used to think that the only reason professional basketball players could jump so high was because of their shoes. I think Milton Friedman was possibly the Antichrist. I eat 1-3 pastries a day. I am an avid reader. I think Pascal’s influence on Kierkegaard is, perhaps, underestimated. I believe it isn’t all just in your head.
