In this episode of the Radio DePaul Podcast, Priya and I explore tattoos. We talked with a variety of interviewees including some who have tattoos and some who don’t. We also talked with Shruti Bakre, a self taught tattoo artist, to get her perspective from behind the needle.
Tattoos can have a lot of meaning for some people, and for others, it’s more of an aesthetic choice. We talked to Henry Flesch, a DePaul student with over 50 tattoos. A main reason Flesch continues his collection is because they add to his confidence.
We also explored the stigma behind tattoos and some of the reasons why people don’t or can’t get them. Felicity Cole, a student in the DePaul School of Music, talks about getting her first and only tattoo. While she wants more, Cole recognizes potential barriers in the workplace. DePaul film student, Emily Goldstein, explains that despite wanting tattoos, it goes against their religion.
To get the full experience, we went to Fudo Tattoo — a tattoo shop in the city. Check out what tattoo we picked out to commemorate this week’s episode.
