On March 5 and 12, 2021, representatives from the HerCDM, DePaul Dazzling Demons, and DePaul’s Public Interest Research Group at DePaul spoke about their organizations on the DePaul Half Hour.
HerCDM is a club that networks, empowers, and builds a community for women in all majors within the College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University. They host 3-4 events per quarter which have included resume workshops, interview workshops, panels, events with guest speakers, and social events. Recently they hosted a Bob Ross painting party where the attendees painted together and were able to network with one another. HerCDM has also hosted events featuring CDM alumni who speak about their experiences after graduation, finding jobs, and what employers are looking for in a job candidate. General body meetings are held at the beginning of every quarter where HerCDM introduces their eboard and any event they have planned. While their events are catered to women in CDM, anyone is allowed to join and be a part of their community. You can find them on DeHub, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
DePaul Dazzling Demons is a student-run majorette dance group aiming to perform at sporting events and compete in official competitions. Dazzling Demons President and Captain Karma Jackson, VP and Treasurer Vicky Privert, and Co-Captain and Safety Officer Ky Hayes speak about their experiences with majorette dancing. They find that majorette dancing allows them to express themselves in a powerful and genuine manner, while also training their bodies and minds to endure strenuous training sessions. Majorette dancing incorporates traditional black dancing where teams typically dance alongside the band at football games. Since DePaul does not have a football team, DePaul Dazzling Demons hopes to perform at basketball games once safety and health regulations permit them to. Once they recruit some more members, their next goal is to participate in competitions. If you are interested in joining, you can reach out to their DeHub, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, email: dpdazzlingdancer@outlook.com.
DePaul’s Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) is an organization that works on campaigns and policies that impact both the Chicago-land area as well as the whole of Illinois. They are currently working on four initiatives involving a new voter project, textbook affordability, combating hunger and homlessness, and 100 percent sustainability. Every campaign is student coordinated and student organized. Members are able to choose their workload, whether they want to participate in a single campaign, or if they want to participate in all four. PIRG recently met with SGA and spoke with them about how the two groups can work together to bring these initiatives to DePaul’s campus. Keep an eye out for PIRG’s upcoming new voter project and Earth day events to be held in April, dates to be announced. You can find PIRG on Instagram @depaulpirgstudents and you can get more information by contacting PR Officer Dilpreet Kaur at DKAUR1@depaul.edu. You can also fill out their interest form here.
