On April 16, 2021, representatives from DeRPG, Pokédemons, and DePaul Beat Saber spoke about their organizations on the DePaul Half Hour.
DeRPG is a student-run club where members are able to learn about and play table-top roleplaying games (TTRPGs) and traditional board games. A TTRPG can be described as a collaborative story-telling board game, where a game master (GM) creates settings, characters, and stories for their players to interact with. Dungeons & Dragons is a popular system, but there are others that DeRPG members choose to explore for those who want to branch out. Campaigns of all lengths and types are being run on a regular basis, so players always have options if they want to get involved in a game. While campaigns may last for weeks or even multiple quarters, DeRPG members often host single-night games, called modules, that don’t require as much time commitment. DeRPG welcomes players of all experience levels to join their community and be a part of their gaming family. You can join DeRPG’s Discord server here.
Pokédemons is a club focused around the Pokémon franchise. They host meetings through their Discord where members have formed a community space. In the past, members have travelled across the US to participate in official Pokémon tournaments where they competed for status, money, and awards. Aside from officially sanctioned Pokémon content, many of the members participate in Showdown matches and one group plays a fan-made Pokémon table-top role-playing game. Some of their other events have included Pokémon Go sessions, pre-release parties, and movie nights. To learn more about the club, join their Discord, or you can contact their president Jack Sandstrom (jacksandstrom1999@gmail.com) with any questions you may have.
DePaul Beat Saber is a competitive Esports team at DePaul University that specializes in playing the virtual reality rhythm game, Beat Saber. In Beat Saber, the player wears a VR headset and must use two virtual blades to cut up speeding blocks to the beat of a song. During competitions, the teams not only choose the best player for the round’s song, but also utilize a ban phase to their advantage to eliminate a song from a set. Even though the expectations are high during competitions, DePaul Beat Saber’s goal is ultimately to help its members improve at the game. They are accepting players of all experience levels, though students who are interested in joining the club during campus restrictions must have their own VR equipment, a reliable internet connection, and a computer that is capable of streaming the game. You can find out more about the game and the team on their Discord server. You can join the general DePaul gaming discord using https://discord.gg/depaulesports. From there you can find the Discords for all the different gaming communities and learn more about the opportunities that each one offers.
