CHICAGO | California-native Asha Imuno and his Hip-Hop and R&B influenced music will be one of the many acts during the Tomorrow Never Knows Fest, a city-wide festival that features local and nationally acclaimed indie artists.
Imuno’s discography seamlessly blends influences from class Hip-Hop and R&B while incorporating his take on new age Soul & Funk. His breakout single, “ZIG ZAGGING,” includes west-coast funk inspired drums with a soulful guitar while the lyrics describes how we as people can’t outrun our innermost thoughts and feelings.
The “FLORIDA WATER” singer honed his craft by working throughout his teenaged years. His grandmother worked as pianist and music director in churches throughout the 80s until the early 2000s. He notes that his parents always played good music for him and his siblings, notably Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder and The Isley Brothers.
He began rapping over his own beats when he was 16 and ultimately shared them on SoundCloud. From there, he grew a hyper-local following and dropped his first mixtape, “Good News,” in 2020. The next year, Imuno began working on his debut album, “PINS & NEEDLES,”alongside collaborator Zach Ezzy.
“PUSHING BUTTONS,” the lead single of the album, explores Imuno’s impulsion and carelessness with honest lyrics and a reflection of his “shadow self.” The album, years in the making, will have its own listening party at Classick Studios from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Imuno will then perform at Sleeping Village as part of TNK Fest, starting at 8:30 p.m.
